The Savanna is the UK's top provider of South African foods. It is a thriving, privately owned family business based in London, founded in 2005. Like most start-ups, it wasn't a bed of roses in the beginning: they didn't have a business plan - in fact they didn't know what one was back then - and none of them had a clue about accounts and didn't bother keeping any for the first two years! Things have changed a lot since then!

What we did

Enjoy a taste away from home

We all get a little home sick when away from home, and often miss the little things we take for granted. We captured the heart of what it means to be South African through simple illustrations that bring a smile as memories surface. Crafting not only an e-commerce website but a place where South Africans abroad could enjoy a taste away from home. Closing the distance between countries through cultural nuances and subtle reminders of where they come from. Every aspect of the design and experience was intended to remind our users why they should always remain proudly South African.

Mouth watering product shots

Shopping in general is an overwhelming experience. Now having access to all these 'products' through an online channel is somewhat dangerous for users with emotional connections with South African products (well at least for me..) Our aim was to sell these products to customers and give them a rich experience and encourage them to purchase the products online. We achieved this by giving users the ability to deep zoom into product shots and leave them with wanting/needing to buy the product.

The Result

We created a desirable and repeatable experience
It's great when you have users returning to your site to by more. This is obviously not purely based on their online experience but ultimately on the products themselves. BUT, if users find your site easy to navigate, clearly signposted and if it has a simple check out process, you are guaranteed that your users will visit your site regularly. We have only had good feedback from people who use this site to remind themselves that they are proudly South African.

The Savanna now serves 10 000 customers a week
The Savanna now serves 10 000 customers a week, has six shops in London, an online ordering service for UK-wide deliveries, a purpose built butchery, 3,000 square foot warehouse and 20 staff dedicated to making and selling the best south African and Zimbabwean food in the UK.
