THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY (DOE) Project showcase microsite

The Department of Energy is responsible for ensuring the exploration, development, processing, utilisation and management of South Africa's mineral and energy resources. South Africa’s economy is carbon intensive, making the country’s role in climate change significant. The DOE is exploring alternative energy sources while continuing to address poverty and socio-economic issues within the country. Many projects and programmes are being rolled out across the country to provide secure, clean and renewable energy.

The need

COP 17 Conference presentation for the DOE
We were approached by The Department of Energy and Microsoft to craft a 'Micro-site' presentation for the DOE to showcase their projects at the COP17 conference in Durban. The Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCC meets annually to assess progress in dealing with climate change. It was therefore important to highlight and showcase the various programmes and projects being rolled out in South Africa addressing the country's contribution to climate change. To make things interesting, we only had 5 days to deliver the finished solution for the conference.

So what did we do?

  • Very simple Information architecture
  • Clear and simple navigation
  • A smartly designed and informative micro-site
  • Custom illustrations
  • Created detailed maps
  • Strong brand positioning

We made it Interactive, web based and beautiful

Although the brief initially received from the DOE entailed little more than a glorified Power Point presentation, we decided, in collaboration with Microsoft, to create an interactive micro-site that would showcase the Department of Energy and their activities in a much more engaging way.

We were given a fairly open brief regarding the visual style of the micro-site. We took this opportunity to really push the visual appeal of the micro-site through simplicity, typography, and focusing on the message at the heart of the conference; addressing climate change.

Custom illustrations

We created simple yet descriptive illustrations for each of the showcased projects. Our goal was to visually differentiate the DOE and create a compelling presentation without the use of cliché stock photography. The use of large typography and bright colours ensured that this presentation would be difficult to overlook.
